Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful and transformative experiences in life—but let’s be honest, it’s not always comfortable! From swollen ankles and feet, to sore arches, aching legs, plantar fasciitis and fatigue, it can be painful and slow us down, especially us New Yorkers who use our feet to get around. One effective way to alleviate some of these discomforts is through foot massage. At Maternal Massage and More we incorporate foot massage into every session.

Why Your Feet Deserve Extra Love During Pregnancy

As your body produces more fluid and your center of gravity shifts, your feet and ankles can swell or feel tight. This is especially common in the second and third trimesters. Carrying extra weight and hormonal changes can also flatten your arches or cause discomfort when walking or standing for long periods.

Foot Massage can:

  • Improve circulation, helping to reduce swelling and discomfort.

  • Ease muscle tension, especially in the calves and arches.

  • Promote relaxation, lowering stress hormones and encouraging better sleep.

  • Support emotional well-being, which is just as important as physical comfort during pregnancy.

Is It Safe to Get a Foot Massage While Pregnant?

We literally hear this question every day in our office, and the answer is YES!!

You may have heard there are points on the feet that can bring on labor, making foot massage not safe. The truth is, there are! These points need to be hit frequently and specifically which is why its important to find a trained prenatal massage therapist and ideally one that also does lymphatic drainage, when you do it is extremely safe and beneficial.

We also encourage your partner get involved and offer up a foot massage,

making it a sweet bonding experience.

Tips for a Safe and Soothing Experience

  • Use gentle, circular motions rather than firm kneading.

  • Elevate your feet during the massage to help with swelling.

  • Apply a natural oil or lotion—something mild and fragrance-free.

  • Stay hydrated after the massage to support circulation and reduce fluid retention.

Incorporating foot massage during pregnancy isn’t just a treat—it’s a way to nurture yourself and enhance sleep, reduce stress and create a calming effect, allowing mothers-to-be to unwind and connect with their bodies and it also feels so good!

Whether performed by a partner, a professional, foot massage can be a simple yet effective way to enhance well-being during this transformative time. Embrace the journey of pregnancy with the soothing touch of a foot massage, and enjoy the many benefits it brings.
